The Best Time for Kicking Horse Rafting

When to raft the Kicking Horse River near Golden, BC — the May–September season month by month, when the water peaks, and the best time for big rapids.

Updated July 2026

The Kicking Horse rafting season runs from roughly mid-May to mid-September, and unlike rivers that fade once the snow is gone, it holds good water all summer — it is fed by both glacier melt and snowmelt. But the river changes character month to month, so the “best” time depends on whether you are chasing the biggest rapids or the friendliest water.

The short answer

  • Biggest, wildest water: June and early July, at the snowmelt peak.
  • Warmest, most reliable weather: July and August.
  • Quietest rivers and warm-glacial-blue water: late August into September.

Month by month

May — The season opens as levels start to rise. A surging early-season river makes for great rafting, though the air and water are cold; your wetsuit earns its keep.

June — The Kicking Horse peaks with snowmelt in June and early July. This is when the Middle Canyon is at its biggest and pushiest, running a solid Class 4. It is the month for rafters who want maximum power — the water is high, brown-green, and fast.

July — High water often sticks around into July, paired with the warmest, sunniest days of the year. You get lots of big whitewater and long daylight, which is why July is the busiest month on the river.

August — Levels ease to a friendlier Class 3, and the river turns a striking bright glacial blue. The rapids are still fun and the water is at its warmest — an ideal month for first-timers and families who want excitement without the June ferocity.

September — Lower, more technical water with some waves that only appear at this level, cooler air, and noticeably quieter rivers. A great choice if you prefer a calmer, gold-tinged shoulder-season trip.

Practical timing tips

  • Book morning departures in July and August if you can — afternoons are warmest but busiest, and morning water is often crispest.
  • Travelling with kids? August’s gentler Class 3 water and warm temperatures are the sweet spot; pair it with the Upper Canyon family float.
  • Chasing adrenaline? Aim for June or early July and step up to a Middle Canyon or full big-water trip — see how the grades and classes compare first.
